What Is Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration?

Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration is the official 30th Anniversary expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, releasing on September 16, 2026. First announced on Pokémon Day (February 27, 2026) and officially revealed on June 1, 2026 with a dedicated trailer, this set is unlike anything the Pokémon TCG has produced in its three-decade history.

There are three things that make this set historically unprecedented. First: it is the first-ever worldwide simultaneous Pokémon TCG release — every region gets the set on the exact same day, in their own language, at the same time. No more Japan-first releases. Second: every single card in the set is foil — commons, uncommons, rares, energy — every pull is a foil card. Third: the set introduces a brand-new rarity called Futuristic Rare, featuring bold neon opalescent artwork by renowned Japanese graphic artist YOSHIROTTEN.

The closest precedent is the 2021 Celebrations set for the 25th anniversary — a product that became one of the most beloved and valuable collector items of the modern TCG era. The 30th Celebration is described by The Pokémon Company as a significantly larger and more premium version of that concept, with more cards, new rarities, and the first global launch in TCG history.

🎉 Historic milestone: The Pokémon TCG turns 30 years old in 2026. The original Base Set launched in Japan on October 20, 1996. This set is a direct celebration of that milestone — and the most ambitious anniversary release the franchise has ever attempted.

The Futuristic Rare — A Brand New Rarity

The headline mechanical innovation of the 30th Celebration set is the introduction of an entirely new card rarity: the Futuristic Rare. This rarity has never appeared in any Pokémon TCG set before and was created exclusively for this anniversary release.

✦ New Rarity — Futuristic Rare

What Is a Futuristic Rare?

Futuristic Rares feature "striking artwork evocative of hope toward an unknown future" — as described by The Pokémon Company in their official press release. They are illustrated by YOSHIROTTEN, a renowned Japanese graphic artist known for bold, neon-drenched, opalescent visual design that bridges art and futurism.

Visually, the Futuristic Rares revealed so far feature bright, pearlescent, shimmering finishes — Mew and Mewtwo shown surrounded by energy symbols in vivid, otherworldly colour palettes unlike anything in the current Pokémon TCG. The full opalescent treatment applied to the entire card — not just the artwork — makes these unlike any card currently in the game.

While only Mew and Mewtwo have been confirmed as Futuristic Rares so far, the official press release does not state these are the only two — meaning more Futuristic Rares may be revealed before launch. These are expected to be the top chase cards of the entire set.

🎨 About YOSHIROTTEN: YOSHIROTTEN is a celebrated Japanese graphic artist and art director known for bold, futuristic visual work that blends neon aesthetics with organic forms. His work has appeared in major international fashion, music, and design campaigns. This is his debut in the Pokémon TCG — a collaboration that immediately positions the Futuristic Rare as a crossover collectible between the art world and TCG space.

🔮 Mewtwo ex — Futuristic Rare

One of only two confirmed Futuristic Rares, Mewtwo features YOSHIROTTEN's bold neon-opalescent art treatment — energy symbols surrounding the Psychic Pokémon in a colour palette unlike anything in the current TCG. Expected to be the single most valuable pullable card in the 30th Celebration set.

🥷 Greninja ex — Double Rare

A new Greninja ex card in the standard main set — not a reprint, but a brand-new card. Coming hot off Mega Greninja ex's debut in Chaos Rising (May 2026), Greninja's inclusion in the 30th Celebration set confirms the Water Starter's status as the TCG's breakout Pokémon of 2026. Expected to be a competitive powerhouse.

🦊 Zorua — Illustration Rare #145

One of three confirmed Illustration Rares in the set's initial reveal, Zorua's card features expanded full-art illustration treatment. The Illusion Pokémon's consistently high popularity — and the beautiful art style typical of the Illustration Rare format — makes this an accessible chase card.

Projected: $15–$40
Illustration Rare
LAPRAS Illustration Rare · #131 ★ ★ ★

🌊 Lapras — Illustration Rare #131

The beloved Transport Pokémon returns in a gorgeous full-art Illustration Rare format. Lapras has been a fan favourite since Generation I and its inclusion as a confirmed Illustration Rare in the 30th Celebration is a fitting tribute. Ideal for OG collectors who grew up with the original games.

Projected: $12–$30

📋 Other confirmed cards include: Lycanroc Illustration Rare (#138), Drifloon Illustration Rare (#136), Espeon (common #69), Umbreon (common #91), and multiple Pikachu cards across various numbers. More cards will be revealed in the weeks leading up to September 16, 2026.

The 30 Pikachu Collection — One in Every Pack

One of the most exciting and unique mechanics of the 30th Celebration set is the 30 Pikachu cards. Every booster pack is guaranteed to contain one of 30 different Pikachu cards, each featuring a unique illustration. All 30 are foil. All 30 carry the 30th Anniversary stamp in the lower-left corner of the artwork — just like the 25th Anniversary cards did.

Collecting all 30 Pikachu variants is one of the defining collector challenges of the set — and with one guaranteed per pack, dedicated collectors will need to open at least 30 packs (and likely far more, given duplicates) to complete the run. Some Pikachu variants are expected to be significantly rarer than others.

Confirmed Pikachus: Pikachu #14 and Pikachu #25 (fitting!) have been officially revealed in the June 1 preview. The 30th Celebration Pikachus carry the 30th logo printed on the card body itself — a design feature that makes them immediately recognizable and distinctly commemorative.

The 30-Card Classic Collection

The 30th Celebration set contains 30 reprints of iconic cards from across the TCG's 30-year history, each featuring a special 30th Anniversary stamp and upgraded foil treatment where the original was non-foil. This "Classic Collection" is the spiritual successor to the 25-card classic subset in 2021's Celebrations set.

🏆 Officially Confirmed Classic Reprints

Two cards have been officially confirmed so far, with the remaining 28 expected to be revealed progressively before launch:

Charizard (Holo Rare)
Base Set · 1996 · 30th Foil Stamp
Pikachu & Zekrom-GX
Team Up · 2019 · 30th Foil Stamp

Additionally, teased in the initial Pokémon Day trailer were cards that may appear in the Classic Collection, including:

Pikachu
Base Set · 1996
Palkia Lv.X
Great Encounters · 2008
Lugia
Aquapolis · 2003
Uxie
Legends Awakened · 2008
Darkrai & Cresselia Legend
Triumphant · 2010
Arceus
Arceus · 2009

+21 more to be revealed
Across all 30 years

💡 Why Classic reprints matter for value: In the 25th Anniversary Celebrations set, the classic subset cards — including Base Set Charizard, Base Set Pikachu, and the Gold Pikachu — became some of the most traded cards of the entire era. Sealed Celebrations ETBs went from $50 at launch to $150+ within a year. The 30th Celebration classics are expected to follow a similar trajectory, with Base Set Charizard likely leading the pack by a wide margin.

🔮 TBD

The 30th Celebration has structural advantages over the 25th Anniversary Celebrations set: it is larger (158 vs 50 cards), introduces a brand-new rarity, features a first-ever worldwide simultaneous launch reducing arbitrage opportunities, and includes the all-foil mechanic that dramatically increases the visual appeal of every pull. These factors point to strong sealed appreciation post-launch.

🔮 The investor thesis: Anniversary sets are a finite print run product. Unlike standard expansions that can be reprinted to meet demand, celebration sets are traditionally produced in limited quantities relative to demand. The combination of all-foil, Futuristic Rare, 30 unique Pikachus, and the first global launch in TCG history makes this a strong long-term hold. ETBs and sealed cases are the primary vehicles for collectors looking beyond cracking packs.

30th Celebration Pull Rates & Your Odds

With only 5 cards per pack (all foil) and a unique set structure unlike any standard expansion, the pull rates for 30th Celebration will differ significantly from what Pokémon players are accustomed to. Based on the 25th Anniversary Celebrations precedent and confirmed set details:

Card Type Est. Rate Per Booster Box (20 packs)
Pikachu (any of 30) 1 per pack (guaranteed) 20 per box (likely duplicates)
Classic Reprint (standard) ~1 in 3 packs ~6–7 per box
Illustration Rare ~1 in 5 packs ~4 per box
Pokémon ex (Double Rare) ~1 in 5 packs ~4 per box
Special Illustration Rare (if confirmed) ~1 in 20 packs ~1 per box
Futuristic Rare (Mew / Mewtwo) ~1 in 30–50 packs ~1 per 1.5–2.5 boxes
Classic Reprint — Base Set Charizard ~1 in 20–40 packs ~1 per 1–2 boxes

⚠️ All pull rates are estimated based on the 25th Anniversary Celebrations precedent. Official rates not confirmed. With only 5 cards per pack, each pack contains a higher proportion of rare/holo cards than a standard 10-card pack.

Collector & Investor Tips for 30th Celebration

Preorder Everything You Can

25th Anniversary ETBs sold out within minutes of preorder going live. 30th will be worse. Set alerts for Pokémon Center, GodPackGames.ca, and other retailers the moment preorders open. Don't wait.

🔮

Chase Futuristic Rares Early

Mew and Mewtwo Futuristic Rares are the set's crown jewels. Early buyers before the market settles will have the most upside. YOSHIROTTEN's art crossover appeal could drive prices above standard TCG rare levels.

🔥

Base Set Charizard Classic Is the Grail

Every Charizard reprint commands a premium. The foil 30th stamp version of the original Base Set Charizard is the single most anticipated pull for casual collectors worldwide. Expect it to move immediately after launch.

📦

Hold Sealed for Long-Term Value

Based on anniversary set precedent, sealed ETBs and booster boxes consistently outperform opened packs as long-term investments. If you have the self-control, keep at least one box sealed.

Complete the Pikachu Set

30 unique Pikachus, all foil, all stamped — collecting the complete set is the defining challenge of 30th Celebration. Full Pikachu sets are expected to carry a significant premium over individual cards on the secondary market.

📅

Watch the October Starter Sets

The nine themed starter card sets releasing October 16 are a second wave opportunity. Niche starter Pokémon from less popular generations may be underpriced at launch — early buyers of the right sets could see fast appreciation.
